Another day in the surroundings of Monywa

One group with Nut, Lin Thu Aung, and Thomas completed coring at Leshe Lake today, and the other group with Sheri, Rienk, Zaw Win and another student drove to one of the three deeper crater lakes to obtain a gravity core of the surface sediments.

Special algae are extracted from all three lakes, dried and sold for various applications. This is a big business here; therefore we needed to obtain a special permission from the regional government and also from Ministry No. 1. And, we had of course to be accompanied by the officer from the Ministry of Forestry and Environmental Conservation.

Today’s harvest meant several more nice sediment cores from Leshe Lake, a gravity core from lake #3 and even a longer sequence, which could be cored with our Russian corer. Today was thus another successful day.
